Cass County Sheriff - K-9

Cass County K9 Team Wins Multiple Awards
On October 4th – 9th, 2009, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office hosted the
annual Heart of America Police Dog Association certification and trials.
During that week, twenty-two K9 teams from Iowa and Kansas attended.
Cass County Deputy Kyle Quist and K9 Kane were presented with two
separate awards. The team received 1st Place in the Detector Dog trial
and was selected for the Patrol Case of the Year. Kane is a dual-purpose
dog trained in locating narcotics, tracking, handler protection,
criminal apprehension, and evidence search.
The Detector Dog competition included all K9’s trained to locate
substances. Narcotics and arson dogs competed for the top three spots.
Judges of the competition place “finds” (targets for the dogs to locate)
in locations throughout a residence, and the teams that locate the most
“finds” in the least amount of time win one of the top three places. The
judges also put a short time limit on the search area. Deputy Quist and
K9 Kane had the fastest time and the most finds and were awarded the top
spot. The Patrol Case of the Year was voted on by the members of the
Heart of America Police Dog Association. Every member of the association
submits a patrol case he or she felt showed the most initiative to win
the award. Deputy Quist and K9 Kane submitted a patrol case that
involved tracking a subject in Atlantic that had burglarized some
residences, stole and wrecked a car, then fled on foot. K9 Kane was able
to successfully track
|
the subject over 1 hour and 15 minutes after the
subject fled the scene. When the subject did not follow orders of
officers present, K9 Kane was deployed to apprehend the subject, which
he did successfully despite being assaulted by the subject. The subject
was later sent to prison for his crimes.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office has two K9 teams – Deputy Quist and
Kane, and Deputy Larson and Maylo - that are utilized frequently and
successfully. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office appreciates everyone who
donated to the HAPDA raffle and recognizes the success of the K9 program
exists because of support from the public. |
